3rd year exhibition...

Exhibition at Herriot Watt

Today i had a meeting with my tutors to discuss what i am going to choose nest year, wether that was print or constructed textiles. I was told to carry on with print, which is fine by me. I then looked around the 3rd years exhibitions to see where they had taken print. Some have gone for cards and stationary and other fashion. Here are a few examples below....

The Garage, Leeds

THE GARAGE

Just got back from leeds where i went for a friends birthday gathering. We went to a newly opened club so i thought i would blog about it as i thought the interior of the club was well thought out and simple. The DJ booth was half a vintage car and you could see the Dj through the wind screen which was nothing i had seen before and thought it was an cool idea. So if your in leeds give it a go, its a new, exciting place to try out.

why have you decided to start this project? leeds is not short on nightspots, but it is rather thin for more intimate spaces… was that the thinking?

Frenchy:

Yeah you’re right, living in leeds you’re never short on choice of nightspots and it is definitely one of the best cities going when it comes to choice of quality nights and venues. there’s certainly nothing like what we’re doing in leeds though, in fact i can’t really think of anything like this in the uk! essentially the garage is a hub for music lovers containing everything under one roof; a club, bar and record shop. in terms of the club we feel there is definitely a need for a more intimate space like the garage and we will be bringing a raw berlin kind of vibe to leeds.

Tristan:

It was never about doing just a club… or just a record shop. we knew from the very beginning that we wanted to marry the two aspects together and create a new hybrid where each thing fed each other. it’s a perfect time to be selling records again in the city too… there’s a whole new generation of record buyers who are just purchasing off the internet but are yearning for that physical experience where they can go and hang out , learn about the music they love around other people and have some kind of filter that concentrates all the good stuff in one place. it was also important to bring an element of art & design into parts of waxworks and the garage and show some personality in the surroundings. i think the fact that we love music to the bone and nothing like this place exists right now are good enough reasons to do it for us

Btec trip to Berlin and Munich 2009....

Reflection

Thinking about the Btec course i did and thinking about my sketchbooks i did. I used them for inspiration for my "journey" project for screen printing. I am definitely going to take a few travelling with me. I find the small sketchbooks enjoyable to fill with anything that inspires me, weather its a place where ill stick in  something that i picked up their,or a piece of artwork in a gallery. It was an art trip so we were mainly in galleries. Here are some pages from the sketchbooks.....

 Norman Foster ...Reichstag

 Architecture around and about...

 Sketch from Bronze Sculpture (Hans)

                             Salvador Dali exhibition

This i did on the train from Berlin to Munich.. was bored and didn't have anywhere to put my pencil sharpening mess to i introduced it to the sketch adding texture...

These pages are from other gallery Visits....

Weaving Away.

This semester i have been studying/designing weave. This was boring to start with because i have no patience but in the end when we starting to come of the technical samples it became interesting as we could then move onto our creative samples. My inspiration was carried on from my knitwear project. I decided to design as if i wanted a fabric for a summer jacket... Chanel tweeds was my main inspiration along with Valentino.
Above Chanel inspiration....one of many

Below are samples of my weaves....

Here to create gaps i wedged paper inbetween then carried on weaving. Afterwards i then took the paper out and it created gaps that weren't weaved. This i did because i was thinking of designing a summer jacket and this would allow air to pass through to the body allowing a cool and light feel fabric.

(Above) Here i left the paper in but before i put the paper in i wrapped it with yarn. I also wrapped yarn around rope too adding a different effect and texture.

Travel Kit ...

Have just been given a vintage backpack for traveling from father..... its different i guess you could say.My mum used it when she travelled around europe about 20 years ago.  Im sure with a bit of love it'll be prefect for the trip.... :s Ellie wright you have to pull out all the stops to beat this baby.
